ApplianceWare is an Atlanta-based software company that focuses on developing Linux-based Network Attached Storage (NAS) Appliances. The company currently offers its award-winning and affordable ApplianceView product to leading OEMs on both the US and Japanese markets.
Business Situation
In the year 2000 ApplianceWare faced new business challenges and needed to pack up its NAS solution, ApplianceView, with new features and functionality enhancements to gain a competitive edge.

Business Solution
To resolve ApplianceWare's IT challenges, SaM Solutions offered a highly competent team of Linux-technology experts that started working on ApplianceView side by side with the client's team.
At the first stage of cooperation, SaM Solutions' professionals focused on helping ApplianceWare release ApplianceView v.2.3 by seamlessly integrating into customer's workflow.
Once ApplianceWare and SaM Solutions built a confidence relationship, the Minsk development center was gradually entrusted to take care of the entire product development life cycle, including responsibilities like technology research, proof-of-concept, technical design, programmatic implementation, testing and further support.
System Highlights
With SaM Solutions in charge of the entire product development, ApplianceView v.5.2 currently offers the following functionality:
- provides file-sharing capabilities with support for storages of >2Tb;
- runs on top of the custom-built security-hardened ALT Linux distribution with a unique package management system;
- features an intuitive Java-based GUI that allows for easy overall system management;
- ensures integration with a wide range of authentication technologies, ranging from Active Directory and NT Domains to Unix NIS and LDAP;
- supports a variety of client operating systems on desktop, including MacOS, Windows, Unix-like OSs etc;
To ensure the product's reliability on various hardware platforms, SaM Solutions' engineers use a test laboratory with a wide range of available hardware.
Results
In tight collaboration with key Open-Source efforts around the world, including Linux Kernel development and Samba project, SaM Solutions ensured ApplianceView competitiveness by adding cutting-edge enhancements as they appear. At this time, work is underway to adapt the product to support the new kernel v.2.6.
As a result of successful 3-year-long partnership with SaM Solutions, ApplianceWare found itself in the position to:
- Rely on SaM Solutions to take care of the entire product development life cycle and completely focus on the marketing and managerial issues instead;
